The Chapel of Garioch Scottish Women’s Rural Institute group
meets from 7.30pm at the Village Hall on the 1st Thursday of each month
of the year from September to May.
A very warm welcome awaits you at our meetings, which are open to
everyone. Our group provides friendship and fun as well as bringing
the community together. It gives women an opportunity to express their
creativity, take up new hobbies or just get a few hours away from their
hectic life.
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a fantastic baker
or flower arranger to join ‘the Rural’. Nor do you have
to be over 50 and have a ‘blue rinse’ or be able to sing
(‘Jerusalem’ or anything else!) – the SWRI is for
all women who live and work in the country or are interested in country
life in all its many and varied forms, both modern and traditional.
There is no age limit other than that you must be over 14 years old
to become a member.
We try to produce a varied and fun programme, with a mix of arts and
crafts (eg candle making, dessert making and displaying), social events
(taste & try, wine tasting, local outings), education (compassion
in world farming, the work of local charities, local history, health
issues) and adventure (hiking). For details of the 2008-9 season, click
here.
There is no need to be a member to come along to any of our meetings,
you will be sure of a warm welcome whenever and however often you decide
to drop in.
What happens at the monthly meetings?
We usually have a speaker and/or demonstrator at each meeting, so we
either sit back and enjoy the talk or get some ‘hands on’
experience of something new.
Then we have refreshments, which is a great chance to have a relaxed
‘blether’. After that comes the ‘business’ part
of the evening. This can cover plans for outings, invitations to events
held by other SWRI groups, and other general announcements. The winner
of the raffle is announced (tickets are 50p each), as is the winner
of the month’s competition.
Notes on Competitions – there are two types of competition
1 -- must be member's own work
2 – is a pick up item (something you have ‘on hand’)
You can enter the monthly competition as and when you want – there’s
no pressure at all to enter. It’s not the winning that’s
important, it’s the fun of taking part.
Subscriptions:
Members: £10 per year.
Visitors/Non-members: £2 per meeting, but this includes your tea/coffee
and usually we have a selection of both savoury and sweet home bakes.
